Since the time of the Vedas, Indian civilisation has held art and aesthetics in the highest regard. The Upanishadic phrase “रसो वै सः”- “He indeed is Rasa”- beautifully expresses this vision, placing aesthetic experience at the heart of our understanding of the divine and the human alike. Art in India has never been mere ornamentation; it has been sādhanā, a spiritual and social pursuit, binding communities, conveying truths, and transforming lives.

This tradition found its structured and philosophical foundation in Bharat Muni’s Nāṭyaśāstra, one of the greatest contributions to global aesthetic thought. Bharat Muni elevated performance to a sacred science, describing how theatre, dance, and music could evoke deep emotional experiences (rasas) and moral reflection in both artist and audience. In doing so, he gave us a legacy that has passed down through the centuries- a legacy we now carry forward with pride and purpose. .

Among the many torchbearers of this rich tradition was Dada Lakhmi Chand, the legendary poet, playwright, and performer of Haryana. He brought alive the ethical, emotional, and cultural depth of Indian performance traditions through the everyday language and idioms of the people. He took the medium of folk arts to great heights. His art was not only expressive but transformative- it entertained, educated, and elevated. It is in honour of this legacy that our university bears his name. .

At Dada Lakhmi Chand State University of Performing and Visual Arts (DLCSUPVA), we do not simply look to the past with admiration- we draw inspiration from it to shape the future. We believe it is but natural that in the land of such profound artistic heritage, we continue to reach the heights once attained by our ancestors; and even higher. .

Our mission is to nurture artists and filmmakers who are not only technically and creatively accomplished but also culturally rooted and socially sensitive. In a rapidly changing world, where digital technologies and global audiences are reshaping the language of art, we prepare our students to meet international standards while staying true to the timeless spirit of Indian aesthetics. .

Here, art is not just taught- it is lived. It is our medium of communication, transformation, and community. Through it, we aim to build a more empathetic, harmonious, and culturally enriched world. .
